Year 9 Tech for Accessibility Workshop 2026

Our Year 9 students had the opportunity to take part in an inspiring Tech She Can event, delivered in collaboration with Made Tech. The session introduced students to the exciting world of technology and encouraged them to think about how technology can be designed with accessibility and inclusion in mind.

During the event, students explored how everyday technology can be adapted to meet different needs. They looked at familiar products such as Alexa, televisions, smart watches and games controllers, considering the accessibility features already available and thinking creatively about how these products could be improved to make them more accessible and user-friendly.

Students also had the opportunity to experiment with micro:bits and coding, using this technology to bring their own ideas to life. They designed and developed concepts for accessible alarms, fidgets and other innovative products, considering how their designs could support people with different needs and overcome potential barriers.

The experience encouraged students to think about the importance of understanding the user when designing technology. They developed their creativity, problem-solving and design skills while considering how technology can be used to make everyday experiences more accessible for everyone.

The event also helped students develop a broader understanding of careers within the technology sector. They discovered that working in tech is not just about coding and IT, but can also involve design, creativity, problem-solving, innovation and usability. By providing students with the opportunity to explore these different aspects of technology , the event helped raise aspirations and increase awareness of the wide range of exciting careers available within the sector.
